Vineyard sites in the warm Wairau Valley and further south in the coolerAwatere Valley were selected for this wine. The Wairau vineyards are plantedon the 'Southern Clays' with heavier soils providing structure and body to theblended wine. The Awatere Valley vineyards are planted on gravelly freedraining soils and due to the cooler nature of these sites, pungent notes ofnettle, gooseberry, citrus and pea pod are found in the finished wine. Thevineyards are all carefully managed with shoot and crop thinning to limit yieldand maximise quality.WINEMAKINGThe individual vineyard parcels were harvested and transported to the wineryfor immediate crushing to capture the freshness of the fruit. Fermentation wasconducted at cool temperatures utilising selected yeast strains. Postfermentation the wines were left on lees to gain richness and complexity. It wasblended and bottled in August 2012.WINEMAKERS COMMENTThis is a very intense and powerful wine. True to its Marlborough origins itsflavours are a mix of ripe tropical fruits, citrus and cooler notes of fresh herbs, and pea pod.
